India's Communist party suffered the biggest defeat, losing its 34-year control of West Bengal. The Left, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), lost to the All India Trinamool Congress under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee.

"Congratulations to Mamata Didi. Now is the harder part. She will have to deliver instead of just agitating and making grand promises," noted a reader who signed just as "Anonymous" in a comment on India Real Time's live blog.
