India’s Congress Party Does Damage Control

India’s ruling Congress party seems to be in trouble-shooting mode after getting burnt by some political bloopers over the week.

Rahul Gandhi raised a political storm in Uttar Pradesh after accusing police of committing acts of violence against the protesting farmers.

While senior Congress leader and Home Minister P. Chidambaram defended the government after an embarrassing gaffe in a list of wanted terrorists handed over to Pakistan, the party scurried to play down some ill-advised remarks by its poster boy Rahul Gandhi on mass murder in northern India's Uttar Pradesh state.

Mr. Gandhi – the scion of India’s Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty and widely tipped to be India’s future prime minister – raised a political storm in Uttar Pradesh after accusing state police officials of committing acts of violence against scores of farmers who were protesting against the seizure of their land.
